What to prepare before a return-to-work meeting
A practical checklist for discussing hours, responsibilities and reintegration after parental leave in Germany.
Returning from parental leave is not only a date on a calendar. It is a resumption of duties in a workplace that may have changed while you were away. A useful meeting makes the practical conditions visible.
Start with the arrangement you want
Write down your proposed weekly hours and their distribution. “Part-time” leaves too much unanswered; twenty-eight hours across four specified days gives both sides something to assess. Note what is fixed by childcare and where you could be flexible.
Ask what changed while you were away
Teams reorganise, clients move and responsibilities shift. Ask about your reporting line, current priorities, recurring meetings and the colleague who holds your work now. This is not an admission that your employment rights disappeared; it is preparation for the actual first week back.
Discuss workload, not only attendance
A reduction in hours needs a corresponding conversation about scope. Identify the responsibilities most closely tied to your role and ask which tasks should be reassigned if they no longer fit the agreed time.
Put a review date in the calendar
The first arrangement may need adjustment after real commuting, childcare and team demands are visible. A check-in after six or eight weeks creates a proper place for that assessment.
Need to apply this to your own dates?
A consultation can turn the general rules into a practical discussion plan.
